Target killing has almost stopped in Karachi: Malik

ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Rehman Malik on Friday called upon all the political parties to join hands and assist the government to foil conspiracies being hatched to destabilize the country.

Winding up debate on the Law and Order situation in Karachi and Quetta he assured the National Assembly that target killing in Karachi has been controlled while there are some small groups involved in various crimes, for whom the local Station House Officers were held responsible to maintain the law and order in the their respective areas.

The minister said that a Parliamentary Committee of all the political parties be constituted to suggest a durable solution to the law and order situation for the economic hub of the country. He said the said committee should sit in Karachi where the interior ministry and provincial government would be at its disposal.

He said that the accused of terrorists incidents were freed by the courts due to lack of evidences and for that the Government had submitted a bill in the Senate.

The anti-state elements, rooted out from Malakand and Swat and our western border areas, have also some tentacles in Karachi and they were hatching nefarious conspiracies to cripple the country.

Giving figures of various crimes in the country during the last two years, he said that cases of murder witnessed a sharp increase while visible decrease was recorded in suicide attacks during that period.

He said that the government has also decided to deweaponize the country especially Karachi from illegal weapons in phases on the demand of all political parties. A programme has been launched to computerize all the licenses issued by the Interior Ministry, he added.

He said seven-year imprisonment would be awarded besides registering cases under Anti Terrorist Act for possessing illegal weapons.

He said that at least 154 target killers were arrested in the past two years besides submitting the challan of 115 accused in courts.
