Pakistan, India politicians to meet for Parliamentarians’ Dialogue

ISLAMABAD: A 19-member multi-party parliamentary delegation from Pakistan is set to leave for India on August 17 to participate in the second round of Pakistan-India Parliamentarians’ Dialogue facilitated by PILDAT.

The two-day dialogue will be held on August 18 and August 19 in New Delhi where Pakistani MPs will interact with their Indian parliamentary counterparts. Senate Deputy Chairman Jan Mohammad Khan Jamali, and National Assembly Deputy Speaker Faisal Karim Kundi will lead the Pakistan delegation while seasoned MPs from Pakistan and India, former federal minister for law Senator SM Zafar from Pakistan and former union minister for external affairs and finance Yashwant Sinha from India will chair the Pakistan-India Parliamentarians Dialogue - II.

A senior parliamentary delegation nominated by Pakistan National Assembly Speaker Fehmida Mirza, who also extended her support to the PILDAT by helping in framing the theme of the dialogue, as well as leaders from major political parties of Pakistan, will interact with a multi-party Indian parliamentary delegation in New Delhi on issues that impact the relations of both countries. The objective of this initiative spearheaded by parliamentarians from both countries is to engage with each other at the public representatives’ level so as to strengthen people-to-people contact for peace and stability in the region.

The Pakistani delegation, other than the deputy presiding officers of parliament of Pakistan, includes Senator Afrasiab Khattak, Senator Jehangir Bader, Senator Humayun Khan Mandokhel, Senator Saeeda Iqbal and Senator SM Zafar. Members from the National Assembly of Pakistan include Anusha Rehman, NA Ayatullah Durrani, Haider Abbas Rizvi, Humayun Saifullah Khan, Laiq Muhammad Khan, Khurram Dastgir Khan, Nadeem Afzal Gondal, Nafisa Shah, Nawabzada Malik Amad Khan, Qamar Zaman Kaira, Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari and Shahid Khaqan Abbasi. Senate Special Secretary Iftikhar Ullah Babar and National Assembly Public Accounts Committee Additional Secretary Moosa Raza Effendi will participate as observers in the Dialogue representing the parliamentary secretariats. The Pakistan-India Parliamentarians’ Dialogue - I was initiated by PILDAT in Islamabad on January 6 and January 7 during which a 7-member Indian parliamentary delegation engaged with a multi-party group of Pakistani MPs on topics including strengthening people-to-people contact, liberal visa regime, terrorism, Jammu and Kashmir, water, role of media, removing the trust deficit, role of women, trade, role of military and intelligence agencies and continuation of dialogue and exchange programmes.

The Indian parliamentary delegation invited to join the dialogue includes Mani Shankar Aiyar, Bhalchandra Mungekar, Brinda Karat, Chandan Mitra, EM Sudarsana Natchiappan, HK Dua, Javed Akhtar, Mohammad Adeeb, NK Singh, Naresh Chandra Agrawal, Naresh Gujral, Naznin Faruque, Raashid Alvi, Rajniti Prasad, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Saif-ud-Din Soz, Sitaram Yechury, Tiruchi Siva, Vijay Jawaharlal Darda, Yashwant Sinha, Akhilesh Yadav, Ananth Kumar, Annu Tandon, Anurag Singh Thakur, Asaduddin Owaisi, Baijayant Jay Panda, Chongshen Mongkosungkum Chang, Deepender Singh Hooda, Hamdullah Sayeed, Harsimrat Kaur Badal, Jaswant Singh, Jayant Chaudhary, Jyoti Mirdha, Kalikesh Narayan Singh Deo, Kirti Azad, Madhu Goud Yaskhi, Manish Tewari, Naveen Jindal, Neeraj Shekhar, Pinaki Misra, Pradeep Majhi, Sandeep Dikshit, Shashi Tharoor, Shatrughan Sinha, Supriya Sadanand Sule, Syed Shahnawaz Hussain, Uday Singh, Vijay Bahuguna, and Yashodhara Raje Scindia.
