PM gives green signal for operation in Karachi

* Police, Rangers will conduct operation in phases to be launched in nine sensitive areas

KARACHI: Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani has given green signal to the provincial government to conduct indiscriminate operation against criminals in Karachi to bring back normalcy.

The decision was taken in a high level meeting presided over by the prime minister at the Chief Minister’s House on Monday.

Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah, Home Minister Manzoor Wassan, chief secretary and officials of law enforcing institutions attended the meeting.

The prime minister gave final nod to the operation in Karachi that would be conducted by police and Ranger.

He said the government has decided to launch a crackdown on terrorists in Karachi and warned that if the government failed to act now someone else will.

Gilani linked the stability of the country with that of Karachi, saying that all possible resources will be brought into use for restoring its peace.

Measures will also be taken to ensure security of traders and industrial areas, he added.

According initial details, the operation would be conducted in phases, in it’s first phase, the operation would be launched in nine sensitive areas of Karachi.

Earlier, chairing a Sindh Cabinet meeting, the prime minister directed the provincial government and the heads of the law enforcement agencies to take stern and indiscriminate action against the culprits who had made the city unsafe.

The prime minister said that the federal government was ready to help Sindh government, but the bleeding of Karachi must stop immediately.

“This is unacceptable and the culprits must be brought to justice by awarding them exemplary punishments,” Gilani said.

He made it clear that the situation in the Karachi had to be brought under control and urged the coalition partners and other stakeholders to jell together and extend their full support to the law enforcement agencies, which were fully committed to protect the lives and properties of the citizens.
