Moonis Elahi’s contempt plea against Zafar Qureshi rejected

LAHORE: District and Sessions Judge Mujahid Mustaqim on Monday rejected a contempt application filed by Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) leader Moonis Elahi against FIA Additional Director General Zafar Qureshi. Moonis, involved in the National Insurance Corporation Limited (NICL) scandal, submitted that during the hearing of the case against him, Qureshi had requested the court to adjourn the matter for filing the final challan. He contended that the letter written by the FIA official was equivalent to interference in court affairs, therefore, contempt proceedings be initiated against Qureshi. However, after hearing the arguments, the court rejected the application. Meanwhile, the judge also dismissed the bail applications of Rizwan Bhatti and Khalil Ahmad, co-accused in the NICL case. Earlier, the defence counsel told the court that his clients were innocent and implicated in the matter with mala fide intention. However, the FIA officials told the court that Rs 320 million was transferred to bogus accounts and the bail applications be rejected. Moonis’s manager Abdul Maalick, Rizwan Bhatti and Khalil Ahmad were also indicted in the case for facilitating and opening the bogus accounts. app
