Pagara considers army only option for Karachi
By Asad Farooq
KARACHI: Awami Muslim League (AML) chief Sheikh Rasheed called on Pakistan Muslim League-Functional (PML-F) chief Pir Pagara, at his residence, here on Monday.
Both leaders discussed several issues of mutual interests, including the current political and law and order situation of the city. Later while talking to media, PML-F chief said that Army is the only option for the restoration of peace in the city. Terming the upcoming month of September as ‘Sitamgar’ (wrathful), he predicted that Marshal Law would soon be imposed and several changes should be expected in the next month. Suggesting the remedy for the volatile situation of provincial capital, Pagara said that Karachi should be re-proclaimed the federal capital. He termed Marshal Law the only solution for the country’s problems.
He said, “Dictatorship comes when the political leadership fails. Although the Army works under the orders of the government and the judiciary, it can step in whenever it wants. I had called for the Army and later Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain demanded for khakis and now masses are asking for the Army”. He further said, “Army is the appropriate solution to the problems.” Answering a question about the dialogues between MQM and the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), he said will and intentions count in dialogue and there was lack of will at both sides. He also predicted the future of PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif as grim. On the occasion Sheikh Rasheed said that people were desperate as there was no writ of the government in the city. He regretted the ongoing bloodshed in the metropolis and said that the people were purchasing coffins for their beloved ones, instead of clothes for Eid. He suggested President Asif Ali Zardari to come to Karachi and stay here till law and order situation is maintained. He further said neither Sindh nor the Muhajir card will help the political parties.
