CJP writes to PM on AG’s appointment

ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has sent a letter to Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, seeking his version about the allegations on the newly appointed auditor general of Pakistan, Akhtar Buland Khan. The prime minister disclosed this in a talk to the media persons at an Iftar dinner at the Prime Minister’s House on Thursday. “The chief justice asked about the allegations, based on some anonymous reports,” Gilani disclosed and announced that the government would respond to the letter of the chief justice soon. Gilani said that a new auditor general was the senior most person in audit service and as per the rules he was to be picked for the auditor general. He also gave a clean chit to Akhtar Buland Khan by declaring that there was no allegation of financial corruption against him. “It might be a bad luck he is from Multan,” Gilani remarked when sought to comment on the observation that the new auditor general’s sole qualification was his association with Multan. Referring to the Public Accounts Committee headed by opposition leader in the National Assembly, which dissolved its sub-committees and special committees against the appointment of the new auditor general, Gilani said that the government honoured the Chartered of Democracy (CoD) by giving the chairmanship of the PAC to the opposition. tanveer ahmed
