CJP writes to president on allegations against AG
ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice (CJ) Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has expressed his reservation over the appointment of Akhtar Buland Rana as Auditor General (AG) of Pakistan by President Asif Ali Zardari. The president appointed Rana as AG on the advice of Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani. The CJ, on August 25, wrote a letter to President Asif Ali Zardari and its copy was sent to the prime minister. The letter read that the president might not be aware of the accusations, when he authorised Rana’s appointment. It was stated that this was a constitution position. Once a person is appointed on this post, he could not be removed except action under Article 209 of the constitution. The CJ has given reference to seven accusations against the new AG. Firstly, he obtained citizenship of Canada without permission, toured foreign countries, holds three Pakistan passports and two National Identity Cards at the same time, was involved in the harassment of a female working under his command. Besides these, other charges levelled against him were that he did not fulfil the criteria for promotion to grade 22. He had also blamed former auditor general in the Supreme Judicial Council. hasnaat malik
