Pak thinks US will once again abandon Afghanistan: Kerry

WASHINGTON: US Senator John Kerry has claimed that Pakistan continues to ‘hedge its bets and rely’ on certain insurgent groups for strategic depth because the country believed that America will once again abandon the Afghan region as it did in the past after fall of Soviet Union.

The US Senator was delivering the statement during the confirmation hearing for US ambassador-designate to Pakistan Richard Olson.

Senator Kerry also acknowledged that Pakistan suffered grievously at the hands of insurgent groups.

“I think we also need to point out that Pakistan has suffered grievously at the hands of al Qaeda, the Taliban and affiliated terrorist groups,” the senator said.

He said that the Obama administration tied work with Pakistan to build a stable economy, adding that Kerry-Lugar bill was part of the same effort.

Kerry said that he is pleased with the recent development between US and Pakistan that led the re-opening of Nato supply line.
