Transparent electoral rolls top priority, says CEC
By Safiullah
QUETTA: Chief Election Commissioner Justice (r) Fakharuddin G Ibrahim on Wednesday said that transparent electoral rolls were his topmost priority and efforts were underway to prepare the lists in a fair manner.
Addressing a press conference at the provincial centre of the Election Commission of Paksitan (ECP), he said he wanted to include names of all eligible Pakistanis in the electoral rolls. “If electoral lists are clear and transparent, the election will also be free and fair,” he remarked.
He said the current electoral lists were not final and could be changed and asked political parties, civil society and the media to help the ECP in preparation of electoral rolls and registration of voters. “The process of registration would continue until and unless all are enlisted,” he said, adding that ECP staff was striving to prepare transparent and error-free lists, however, if anybody was left out, he could inform the commission for registration.
He informed that the ECP would launch a campaign with the slogan “Help yourself, help me and help Pakistan”, so that all electoral rolls could be made transparent and clear.
He said that political parties also played an important role in the process of preparing transparent electoral rolls and sought their support to achieve the targets set by the ECP. Ibrahim urged political parties and civil society to step forward and play a role in generating awareness among the masses with regard to using their right to vote.
He said that transparent elections were mandatory for the country’s future.
