Abidi caught in double trouble
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) on Monday issued a show-cause notice to Senator Faisal Raza Abidi over his press conference in which he had severely criticised the judiciary and Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, while the Supreme Court sought the record of his August 5 press conference.
During the press conference, Senator Abidi had distributed copies of the bank statements of a company, F&A Enterprises, allegedly owned by the chief justice’s son Arsalan Iftikhar. The senator had claimed that the statements carried the address of the Chief Justice’s House.
He had also criticised the Supreme Court for nullifying the recently-passed contempt of court law and termed it part of a plan to pitch two state institutions against each other.
The notice was issued by PPP Secretary General Jahangir Badar. It directs Abidi to give an explanation over his press briefing of August 5 in which he had said that while contempt cases were pending against a number of people, including PPP leaders Babar Awan, Sharjeel Memon and Taj Haider, the court had hurriedly convicted a prime minister and sent him home.
Meanwhile, sources revealed to Daily Times that the Supreme Court had sought footage of Abidi’s press briefing to examine whether it came under contempt of court or not. They claimed that transcript of the senator’s press conference as well as his interview which was aired on a private TV channel during the last week would be presented before the chief justice today (Tuesday) for appropriate action in that regard.
A petition was also moved in the Supreme Court on Monday to initiate contempt of court proceedings against the senator for passing humiliating remarks against the chief justice and judiciary in his press conference on August 5. staff report
