Gilani was wrongly dismissed, says Aitzaz

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) former president and PPP Senator Aitzaz Ahsan, on Tuesday, said that former prime minister Yousaf Raza Gilani’s dismissal was wrong, adding that the “too strong” judiciary oversteps its limits at times.

Talking to BBC News, he defended Gilani against his dismissal by the Supreme Court.

He said the country’s judiciary was “too powerful” and had, at times, overstepped its limits.

The Supreme Court cannot terminate a law that is passed by parliament, he added.

Aitzaz said that democracy had undoubtedly strengthened when the chief justice of Pakistan took a bold stand against General Pervez Musharraf, but now some of the Supreme Court decisions were being questioned and people were pointing fingers at these decisions.

He said the Pakistan People’s Party would be able to form the government in the next elections as President Asif Ali Zardari had good experience of forming coalition governments. online
