Teachers’ salary case: CJ says lack of interest in education sector

ISLAMABAD: During proceedings of the teachers’ salary case, Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry remarked that there was a lack of interest in the education sector and it was the obligation of the chief executive to end exploitation and make policy.

A three member bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Chaudhry resumed hearing the case pertaining to teachers’ salaries at the Divisional Public School in Sargodha.

The Chief Secretary Punjab informed the Supreme Court that this school did not fall under the authority of the government and was independent. He added that the schools board was meeting on Saturday and if the issue regarding salaries was not resolved the provincial government could play a role in the matter.

The Chief Secretary further said that if the government was to sponsor one divisional school it would also have to sponsor 43 similar and over 100 NGO schools.

Chief Justice Chaudhry rejected the provincial chief secretary’s reply in the case adding that if he (chief secretary) was helpless the chief executive would be asked about the issue.

The Chief Justice asked if it was appropriate that teachers were being paid Rs5,000 and had been exploited for 19 years.

The Supreme Court directed the Chief Secretary to resolve the matter within three days and adjourned the hearing of the case till 15 August.
