Govt committed to better Pak-India relations: Zardari* President says govt and people wish to see peace, cooperation flourish in subcontinent
* Two countries need durable peace, security to focus on social, economic development
ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari said the government is committed to better relations between Pakistan and India and he hopes that search by the two countries for peaceful resolution of all disputes through sustained and productive dialogue will bear fruit.
In a message on the occasion of South Asian Free Media Association (SAFMA) seminars, being held simultaneously in Pakistan and India today (Monday), he said, “I wish to felicitate SAFMA and its Secretary General Imtiaz Alam for organising seminars simultaneously in Lahore and Amritsar on ‘In Pursuit of Shared Destiny in the Sub-Continent’ on the eve of Independence Day.” The president said SAFMA has been making systematic and concerted efforts for promoting peace and cooperation in the subcontinent.
Apart from the seminars it has also organised exchange of delegations and candlelight vigil on both sides of Wagah-Attari border on the eve of Independence Day to share the happiness of freedom on the one hand and to pay homage to all those who sacrificed their lives for the cause of freedom, he added. SAFMA, he said, deserves to be commended by all those who wish to promote peace and cooperation in the region.
The present democratic government and the people wish to see peace and cooperation flourish in the subcontinent, he stated, and expressed hope that the endeavours by SAFMA will encourage taking of bold steps to make South Asia an economic powerhouse that will benefit its over one billion people. The two countries need durable peace and security to focus on the social and economic development of their peoples, President Zardari said. “On this occasion I wish to express my full support to the endeavours of SAFMA to bring the peoples of the two countries closer together and help build bridges of understanding, cooperation and trust,” he observed. “I wish its efforts to bring the two peoples to come closer together become the building blocks of the architecture of durable peace and cooperation in the region,” he added. app
