Independence Day celebrated with great enthusiasm
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan celebrated Independence Day with great enthusiasm as celebrations were held across the country.
The day dawned with 31 gun salute in the federal capital and 21 gun salute in provincial capitals. Special prayers were also offered at worship places for the well being, welfare and better future of Pakistan.
Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf addressed a gathering at the flag hoisting ceremony at the Convention Centre in Islamabad and said the resolution of the country’s problems lies with democracy and Pakistan’s survival hinges on it.
Prime Minister Ashraf was also greeted by his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh on Independence Day.
In Karachi, Governor Sindh Ishrat-ul-Ebad and Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah paid homage to the founder of the nation Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and laid floral wreaths at his mausoleum.
Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif attended a ceremony at the mausoleum of Allama Iqbal. In Peshawar celebrations attended by Chief Minister Amir Haider Hoti were held at Police Line while in Quetta Chief Minister Nawab Aslam Raisani attended Independence Day celebrations at Ayub Stadium.
Thousands also attended the flag lowering ceremony at the Wagah border.
