PM appeals to political parties to identify unregistered voters
Staff Report
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf on Saturday appealed to all political parties to help NADRA identify unregistered voters and who did not have Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC).
Talking to National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) Chairman Muhammad Tariq Malik, the prime minister said that political parties should cooperate with the government because a CNIC is mandatory for casting a vote in elections. He said the government was committed to holding fair elections and NADRA should therefore ensure that all registered voters had CNICs before the next elections.
Briefing the prime minister about progress made with regards to issuance of CNICs to citizens, the NADRA chairman said 452 National Registration Centres, 252 Mobile Registration Vans and 70 Semi-Mobile Units were working across the country to register adults in the process.
“Special arrangements have been made for the registration of women. Friday has been dedicated for the registration of women and 11 NADRA centres with female-only staff are helping women acquire CNICs,” Tariq Malik said.
So far, he added, NADRA had managed to register 99.5 percent of voters in Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 99 percent in Punjab, 89 percent in Gilgit-Baltistan and 88 percent in Sindh and FATA.
In Balochistan, 76 percent of population has been registered so far, he said.
