Swiss letter writer will be a traitor

* Former prime minister says he didn't write letter because he had sworn to protect constitution

MULTAN: Former prime minister and Pakistan People’s Party Senior Vice Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani on Tuesday said President Zardari enjoyed constitutional immunity from prosecution under Article 248 and anyone who would write a letter against him to Swiss authorities would commit treason.

"I refused to write the letter because I had sworn to protect the constitution," he remarked.

Talking to APP before leaving for Lahore, he said there would be no clash among institutions if they worked within their constitutional limits.

He reiterated that forces plotting against the government would not succeed in their mission. Gilani ruled out the notion that the differences between PML-N and PTI would benefit PPP in next election. "Everyone should not forget the fact that all opposite forces were united against Abdul Qadir Gilani in the recent by-polls of NA-151 constituency, but nobody could dent the PPP's vote bank," he said.

Former district nazim Malik Faisal Mukhtar, former MPA Makhdoom Mureed Hussain Qureshi, AJK Police IG Mian Tariq Khokar and other PPP leaders saw off Gilani at the airport.

While on Monday, Gilani urged the nation to stand united to promote peace in the country and defeat the menace of terrorism.

Talking to media after offering the Eid prayers at the Darbar Musa Pak Shaheed Mosque, he called upon masses to show patience and fortitude during their life – the same patience that was observed during the holy month of Ramazan. “We all have to work for peace and put together our energies to root out the menace of terrorism,” he said.

Answering a question, Gilani said PML-N leadership was using delaying tactics on the issue of the establishment of Saraiki province.

He said all political parties except for PML-N unanimously believed in the establishment of Saraiki province to end the sense of deprivation among the people of the area. The reservations of PML-N on the issue were meaningless, he added.

He expressed contentment that they had successfully passed through a difficult stage on the matters pertaining to the Saraiki province. “Now the time is ripe to give people their rights,” he said, adding that the voice of the people could no longer be suppressed. app
