President to consult allies over PM's court appearance

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari will chair a meeting of the governments coalition partners today (Sunday) at the Presidency.

The president is expected to hold consultations with coalition partners to decide if Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf should appear before the Supreme Court on August 27.

The coalition partners seem to be divided in their stance on this issue. According to sources, the MQM and PML-F believe the prime minister should appear before the apex court, while the ANP is of the opinion that the PM should not appear and the PML-Q is divided.

A five member bench of the Supreme Court headed by Justice Asif Saeed Khosa will hear the contempt of court case against Prime Minister Ashraf.

The apex court has ordered the prime minister to write the letter to Swiss authorities to reopen corruption cases without any advice in its verdict of in the NRO implementation case.

Former Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani was declared ineligible by the Supreme Court for not implementing this order.
