Farhatullah Babar named Chairman of new provinces commission
ISLAMABAD: The Parliamentary Commission on New Provinces (PCNP) in its maiden meeting held here on Tuesday elected Farhatullah Babar as its chairman, despite a PML-N boycott of the meeting, Geo News reported.
Nine out of the 12 nominated members were present in the meeting held in the parliament house here, as the three members of the PML-N who were nominated by the National Assembly Speaker protest boycotted the meeting in protest.
Those who attended the meeting included: Farhatullah Babr, Sughra Imam, Abdul Ghafoor Haidri, Haji Adeel, Jamshed Dasti, Arif Aziz Sheikh, Ali Musa Gilani and Farooq Sattar.
The meeting elected Farhatullah Babar as chairman of the commission, while a sub-committee was also formed for formulating rules, regulations and modus operandi of the commission.
Briefing the media after the meeting, Federal Minister Khurshid Shah said that the composition of the commission could not be changed on the demand of the PML-N adding that the demand for including Punjab members alone in the commission was an insult to the Parliament.
Khurshid Shah urged upon the PML-N to not obstruct the process at this stage and if it desired it could oppose the formation of the commission in the assembly.
In its inaugural meeting which was boycotted by the PML-N, the commission expressed the determination to present a report on the formation of new provinces within a month.
