Staff Report

LAHORE: Nawaz Sharif, president of his own faction of the Pakistan Muslim League (PML-Nawaz), said on Monday his party believed in supremacy of law and independence of judiciary and it has played historic role along with lawyers, civil society and media for the restoration of judges.

He expressed these views during a meeting with a delegation of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), led by its president Yasin Azad.

Nawaz said that the PML-N had always taken decisions keeping in view interests of the nation and the country.

He said the conference arranged by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) in Islamabad on May 26 to address problems faced by the Baloch was a positive step, adding that he supported the SCBA in this regard. He said that a sense of deprivation prevailing in Balochistan should be removed for the stability of the country. He said that bringing the people and leaders of Balochistan to mainstream would guarantee a stable and strong Pakistan and his party was in touch with Baloch leaders in this regard.

The PML-N president asked the SCBA to submit proposals for making the appointment of judges more transparent. He said the PML-N had proposed that the SCBA president should be an ex-officio member of the Parliamentary Committee for Appointment of Judges, but the PPP-led government opposed it.

He said, “We believe in policies of merit and transparency and decisions will have to be taken in [the] country’s interest by rising above personal liking and disliking over this issue.”

Talking on the occasion, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif said that lawyers had written a new history for the independence of judiciary. He said lawyers had struggled for the independence of judiciary. He said the nation would have to play its role for maintaining the independence of judiciary at all costs.

SCBA President Yasin Azad said that the legal fraternity recognised the struggle of the PML-N for the independence of judiciary. Yasin informed Nawaz that the SCBA was arranging another conference on September 9 in Quetta to give recommendations on Balochistan issue.

Nawaz ordered the provincial leadership of Balochistan to fully participate in the conference.

On the request of Yasin Azad, Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif also announced a Rs 5 million grant for a residential complex of lawyers.

PML-N leaders Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Rana Mashhood Ahmad Khan, Senator Rafique Rajwana, Naseer Bhutta and Anousha Rehman and SCBA members Aslam Zar, Abdul Majeed, Abbas Ali, Kifayatullah, Habib Qureshi, Amer Sohail, Mian Ayub, Wasim Mumtaz and Talat Abbas were present.
