Commission on new provinces lands in SC
Staff Report
LAHORE: The Watan Party’s Barrister Zafarullah Khan on Thursday filed a petition in the Supreme Court’s (SC) Lahore Registry challenging commission constituted for the creation of new provinces.
The petitioner said new provinces, if required for administration purposes, could be created with the consent of provincial assemblies concerned and the federal government could not make such a decision on its own.
He said that the commission formed by certain parliamentarians was against the provision/articles 239(4) and 4, 5 and 8 of the constitution. He said that Pakistan “stands before us today as a mirror, reflecting our own politicians’ political and ethical imperfections”.
Khan said that creation of new provinces on the basis of local ethnicity and languages instead of administration purposes would be “illegal”.
He said that the commission formed to create new provinces was discriminatory and did not deal and represent the parties concerned and its application was for a specific purpose and specific province. He requested the court to declare formation of this commission unconstitutional.
