PPP asks CJP to follow in CEC’s footsteps
By Tanveer Ahmed
ISLAMABAD: Opposition leader in the National Assembly Khursheed Shah on Wednesday asked Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry to follow the footsteps of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Fakharuddin G Ebrahim and resign over the controversial presidential elections.
Talking to Daily Times on telephone from Sukkur, Shah said that it has now become evident that the presidential election was conducted wrongly and all the mess was created because of snatching of the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) powers by the Supreme Court on presidential elections. “It is good to see that Fakharuddin G Ebrahim has admitted his mistake and decided to step down as CEC,” Shah said and demanded that now Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry should also resign from his office “for his own mistake”.
It may be recalled that Khursheed Shah had demanded resignation from the CEC some days back when the Supreme Court rescheduled the presidential election on the petition of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PNL-N) Chairman Raja Zafarul Haq. Shah said that a constitutional crisis has been created because of what happened during the presidential election and it has put a question mark on the credibility of the presidential election, which was swept by the PML-N when its candidate, Mamnoon Hussain, returned elected with an overwhelming majority.
The opposition leader noted that the order of Supreme Court to advance the date of presidential election actually triggered the controversy. Shah also demanded the resignation of the members of the ECP for their “failure to discharge their duties on presidential election”.
