By Ahtesham Azhar
KARACHI: Despite soaring prices, target killings and worst situation in terms of law and order, Karachiites are seen 'shopping like crazy' as Eid is approaching. Markets and shopping malls are mostly full of people of all age groups; busy doing their Eid preparations in 'full swing'.
The mega city of the country, known as the business hub of the country has a number of popular malls, providing 'ultimate' shopping experience to its citizens. Almost all kind of attires including Western and Asian, shoes as well as other accessories are easily available across these markets in the metropolis.
Major markets and malls in the city include Tariq Road, Bohri Bazar, Boltan Market, Millennium Shopping Mall, Jama Cloth Market, Bohri Bazaar, Zainab Market, along with Dolmen Shopping Mall Clifton, Park Towers, Zamzama market, Schon Circle, and Malir's Liaquat Market among others.
Tariq Road, which is located at the heart of the city, is one of the most popular markets famous throughout the country. In particular, it is not a market but a street, having thousands of shops for apparel, footwear and accessories. Many outlets are popular across the country for cosmetics, garments and shoes both in terms of quality and reliability.
Rabi Center and Dolmen Mall of Tariq Road are the most known shopping malls of the market. While Rabi Center is famous for fancy dresses for the ladies, Dolmen Mall caters 'everyone'.
Every year, just before Eid, many shopkeepers also set up installs on the streets to boost their sales.
While mostly upper and middle class public shop at Tariq Road, many people are witnessed doing 'window shopping' only.
Jama Cloth Market, another significant and one of the oldest markets of Karachi is particularly famous for 'women fabrics'. Located at MA Jinnah Road near Burns Road, Jama Cloth has hundreds of shops of garments, cosmetics as well as bangles and toys for the kids. It specifically hosts tailors for 'bridal wear'.
Jamia Cloth Market generally serves the working class, and although the material available is 'economical', there is no doubt in quality of the fabrics, and other things available. Moreover, we have Hyderi Market at North Nazimabad, which is known for 'true Asian apparel'. Mostly the residents of Gulshan-e-Iqbal, New Karachi, North Karachi, FB Area, Nazimabad, KDA, Sohrab Goth and other nearby localities comes to shop there.
On the contrary, bazaars especially meant for the upper class inhabitants include Zamzama Market, Khadda Market, The Forum Mall, Park Towers, Atrium Mall and Dolmen Shopping Mall Clifton. These malls have high-quality branded outlets, which stock almost everything from apparel to groceries and electronics.
Zainab Market and Bohri Bazar in Saddar are also amongst the 'oldest' and most 'celebrated' markets of the urban capital. While Zainab Market offers casual and formal wear for every age group, Bohri Bazar has almost every household item you can think of.
Shopping in Ramazan thus has given rise to new business trends where customers enjoy almost 'uninterrupted' shopping in the city, all the way until Chand Raat.
