Suicide attack on Islamabad mosque foiled, one dead

ISLAMABAD: A would be suicide bomber was shot dead after he failed to detonate his explosive laden vest inside a mosque here on Friday.

The attacker shot and injured three people at the mosque located in Bara Kahu area of Islamabad. One of the three injured who were shifted to Poly Clinic Hospital succumbed to his bullet wounds.

"The guard opened fire on the bomber as he entered the mosque and killed him. He could not explode his jacket," a police official said.

Another police official, Majeed-ur-Rehman, said a guard was killed in an exchange of fire with the bomber before he was shot dead. Another police official confirmed the death.

SSP Operations Dr Rizwan said that Bomb Disposal Squad was called in to defuse the suicide jacket while the mosque was sealed.

TV footage showed body of the suicide bomber lying on the floor of the mosque. The attacker also had a 9mm pistol and hand grenades in his possession.
