Lawyer refuses to be part of reference against SC judges
Staff Report
LAHORE: Senior lawyer Waqar Hassan Mir, who was nominated for a committee of the Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) to draft a reference against the chief justice of Pakistan (CJP) and two other judges of the Supreme Court (SC), has declined the nomination on plea that he has “smelled manipulative motives” behind his inclusion in the committee.
On July 30, the LHCBA had adopted a resolution to move a reference against three SC judges who had passed an order of holding presidential election early. The three judges are Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Jawwad S Khawaja and Justice Azmat Saeed.
The bar on August 6 had constituted a six-member committee to finalise the reference.
The members included Dr Khalid Ranjha, Senator Kazim Khan, Waqar Hassan Mir, Shukat Umar Pirzada, Saiful Malook and Mirza Nasar Ahmad.
Waqar Hasan Mir on Monday sent a letter to the LHCBA Executive Committee, stating that the general house of the LHCBA did not have mandate about filing the reference and as the general house did not nominate the undersigned in this behalf. “Therefore, the undersigned is not in consonance with the constitution of the committee, hence, unable to join the committee proceedings.”
He said he knows nothing as to when the committee meeting was convened and what was its proposed agenda.
