Balochistan lawyers protest judges’ nomination

QUETTA: Lawyers in Balochistan on Thursday staged a demonstration on the premises of Balochistan High Court (BHC) and burnt their coats in protest against the nomination of judges by judicial commission.

They were carrying banners and placards inscribed with various slogans and demands.

Advocates Shah Muhammad Jatoi, Abdullah Khan and Khalid Khan headed the rally.

Addressing the protesters, they said the commission had made nominations against merit “which completely violates the rights of local lawyers”.

“There isn’t any shortage of educated and competent lawyers here but deliberate efforts are being made to appoint judges who are not locals which is unbearable for us and we will fight for our rights.”

They said that it was a “conspiracy to keep us away from judiciary” and said that judges should be appointed on merit. The protesting lawyers said they would call a session to devise future course of action on the issue. Various lawyer organisations also boycotted courts in protest. staff report
