* All political parties will be allowed to field candidates for elections
LAHORE: The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has decided to hold the local government elections in Punjab on a non-party basis.
The decision emanated at a high-level meeting presided over by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif at the PML-N Central Secretariat, Model Town, on Saturday.
Moreover, all political parties will be allowed to field their candidates for the polls, sources said.
During the meeting the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif approved a proposed draft for the local bodies system in Punjab. The sources said that the government would table the proposed bill in the Punjab Assembly next week.
They said that the prime minister applauded the special committee, which prepared the bill.
Chairing the meeting, Nawaz said that democracy would strengthen in the country through the implementation of the local government system, which helps transferring power to the masses at the grassroots level.
“The Punjab local government system should be aimed at transferring optimum powers to the local representatives,” he said.
The PM said that people’s problems should be resolved at the local level through the effective ‘panchayat’ system, being introduced in the Punjab Local Government Bill 2013.
He said that the standard of education and health should be raised through private-public partnership in the local government system.
He also lauded the introduction of education and health authorities in the proposed bill. agencies
