MQM-PPP talks on new LG system in Sindh fail
KARACHI: Pir Pagaro-led PML-F has mostly supported the PPP government’s daft on new local government system, while the government’s team failed in persuading its former coalition partner, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) in its another attempt made on Saturday. The ministerial committee held separate meetings with the PML-F and the MQM as part of its continued talks with political parties having representation in the Sindh Assembly on the new LG system. It had also invited Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tahreek-e-Insaf members for a meeting, but they did not turn up there, claiming that they had yet not received the government’s draft. The ministerial committee held talks with PML-F and MQM leaders at the Chief Minister’s House. The meeting with the PML-F proved successful. “We have developed some 97 percent of the consensus,” said PML-F leader Imtiaz Shaikh. The MQM’s panel that held another meeting with the government’s team consisted of Dr Farooq Sattar, Faisal Sabzwari, Syed Sardar Ahmed and Kunwar Naveed Jamil. “The government’s LG system draft is mostly reflection of 1979’s local government system introduced by dictator Ziaul Haq,” said Faisal Sabzwari. He said that the MQM had reiterated its demand that district governments should be given financial, administrative and political powers mentioned in Article 140-A of the constitution. razzak abro
