ISLAMABAD: Unveiling a 2,500-page ‘white paper’ on election rigging on Wednesday, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan said that the Election Commission of Pakistan would be directly responsible if by-polls were also rigged.
Addressing a press conference, Imran said, “Pakistan would have come to streets had the PTI given a strike call after the election results.”
He alleged that the last general election was massively rigged, but PTI accepted the results for the sake of the future of democracy.
He unveiled the white paper, providing evidence of rigging in the general election in 18 constituencies of the National Assembly and 16 of provincial assemblies by substantiating written, pictorial and video evidences.
He said the role of returning officers was “shameful” during the election. Cautious of the last hearing, he again clarified that the word “shameful” was not for the Supreme Court, which served a notice to him over the ‘abusive word’.
He also categorically stated that the purpose of the press conference was not to upset the democratic process, but to ensure that corrupt practices were not repeated in the future.
He said that the people of Pakistan would lose faith in the democratic process if rigging continued. He said the people came out to cast votes despite serious security risks, but were frustrated to see the results.
