LB polls on non-party basis coup against democracy: Gilani

LAHORE: Former prime minister and PPP Vice Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani said on Wednesday that local bodies elections in Punjab on non-party basis would be tantamount to a coup on democracy. Talking to the media at the Lahore airport, Gilani said the Punjab government “is scared of its weak position in the local bodies polls and that is why it has decided to conduct the polls on non-party basis”. “Winning candidates in these elections will be annexed with powers of police,” Gilani said, adding that such acts were tantamount to pre-poll rigging. The former prime minister said southern Punjab was being discriminated against since long. He said this area would become a separate province on the popular demand of the public. The former PM said the PML-N had raised slogans of change and told people that it would give them electricity within three months. “But now they (PML-N) are saying that they will give electricity after five years,” Gilani said. He said Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s speech to the nation was disappointing. inp
