Work on power generation project from solid waste started

RAWALPINDI: Authorities have started work on the project for generating electricity from solid waste in Losar, Rawalpindi.

Garbage from entire Rawalpindi city is dumped in Losar and its 75 percent area of the site is filled with the waste. Sources in the Rawalpindi Solid Waste Management Department (SWMD) said 600 kanals were purchased by the department in collaboration with the Asian Development Bank in the suburban area of Losar. Due to the increase in population, 75 percent of the landfill had been filled with garbage, sources added.

Sources said that SWMD had begun work on the project to produce methane gas and five megawatts of power from the waste in Losar. Seven wells had been dug and 200 more wells were required to generate five megawatts, sources added. online
