New 1,100-strong force to keep Gwadar safe

QUETTA: A high-level meeting on Friday decided to form a new force consisting of 1,100 personnel for Gwadar Safe City Project.

This meeting was presided over by Balochistan Chief Minister Abdul Malik Baloch and attended by Commander Southern Command Lt Gen Muhammad Nasser Khan Janjua, Balochistan Chief Secretary Saifullah Chathha, provincial ministers, home secretary, general officers commanding and senior officials. It decided to allocate Rs 2 billion for the new force besides taking more measures for the security of Chinese engineers working in Balochistan. The force would ensure foolproof security of the Chinese engineers and other people living in Gwadar and travelling on the Coastal Highway. The meeting decided to approach the federal government to get financial assistance for this project.

The meeting decided to present the plan on the proposed new force in the meeting to be held with Federal Minister Ahsan Iqbal in chair in Islamabad on August 3 to review Gwadar-Kashghar Economic Corridor Project. Addressing the meeting, the chief minister said that security forces should get cooperation of the local government representatives in their actions against anti-peace elements. Mutual cooperation of security forces and local bodies’ representatives will help in achieving task for restoration of peace, he said. He emphasised the need to complete the projects of cadet colleges and residential colleges in Panjgur, Turbat and other districts of the province.

Commander Southern Command said that chief minister Balochistan, all political parties and civil and military leadership were on a same page in war on terrorism. Balochistan police have been enjoying support and cooperation of the army, Frontier Corps and intelligence agencies in their actions against militants and anti-peace elements, he said.
