ISLAMABAD – The Pakistan People’s Party and the Pakistan Muslim League on Friday opposed direct elections for the Senate, upper house of the parliament.
Participating in a debate on mode for Senate election, Pakistan People’s Party leader Senator Farhatullah Babar said that the current system of proportional representation was very important and it should not be disturbed.
He said that the constitutional amendments may be brought to stop horse trading during the election process. Pakistan Muslim League secretary-general Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed also opposed the direct election for the Senate, saying it involves many intricacies.
He said that the direct elections would also block the way of eminent personalities in to the upper house of the parliament. However, National Party leader Senator Hasil Bizenjo proposed that the direct election was a better way to stop horse trading in Senate’s election.
