170 killed as flood displaces 1.2m people across country

ISLAMABAD: National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) revealed on Friday that 170 people have so far been killed in floods and 1.2 million displaced throughout the country.
The floods have damaged a total of 3,093 villages and 8,658 houses in various areas of the country, NDMA spokesman said, adding that 449,460 persons have been affected by floods in Punjab, 625,641 in Sindh and 136,000 in Gilgit-Baltistan. Out of the 8,658 flood-damaged houses, 3,439 are situated in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 3,153 in Punjab, 798 in Balochistan, 321 in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), 812 in Gilgit-Baltistan and 162 in FATA. As many as 3,093 villages have been affected by the floods, of which 2,278 are in Sindh, 512 in Punjab, 17 in AJK and 286 in Gilgit-Baltistan.
According to NDMA, 170 people have so far been killed and 122 injured – 79 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 46 in Punjab, 23 in AJK, 13 in Balochistan, 7 in Gilgit-Baltistan and 2 in FATA.
Meanwhile, Rajanpur DCO Zahoor Hussain told media on Friday that water level in River Indus will go down in the next few days. He said flood victims have been provided tents, rations, cooked food, clean drinking water and health facilities, and government functionaries are working day and night to strengthen embankments of Hamid and Bukhari canals. Hussain said flood has inundated 175 villages of 26 union councils in Rajanpur, affecting 52,417 people, while a total of 163,254 acres, of which 84,808 acres is cultivated, is now under water.
The DCO said people affected by a breach in Mashori Bund have been shifted to safer places, as River Indus is in high flood at Nishtar Ghat segment following due to hill torrents. He said 32 relief camps have been set up and ten of them are fully operational. An estimated 1,538 persons, including children, elderly people and women, are sheltered in relief camps, whereas relief teams have so far rescued 22,959 people and shifted them to safer places, and 14,790 patients have been provided treatment. A total of 302,531 cattle have been vaccinated in the affected area and are being provided fodder.
Relief and rescue teams of Pakistan Army and district administration are present in the flood-hit area, helping those trapped and displaced. Punjab Assembly Deputy Speaker Sardar Sher Ali Gorchani, MNAs and MPAs are visiting the affected areas for damage assessment.
