MINSK - After being the beaming recipient of an honourary doctorate degree, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has now also been made an honourary professor by the Belarus State University.
He is one of the few Pakistanis - including Malala Yousufzai, Imran Khan, and squash legend Jahangir Khan - to have been bestowed with an honourary post outside the country. The prime minister already holds an honourary PhD, which was awarded to him by the Government College University (GCU) in January 2014.
There is a long list of politicians and prominent figures who have been awarded honourary degrees from various educational institutions in the country. Other personalities awarded with honourary degrees include Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah, Opposition Leader in National Assembly Syed Khurshid Ahmed Shah and Federal Shariat Court Chief Justice Agha Rafiq Ahmed Khan.
Former interior minister Rehman Malik also made headlines when he received an honourary doctorate degree from the University of Karachi in October 2011. Dr Abdul Salam, the first Pakistani Nobel Laureate was awarded an honourary doctorate by the Punjab University in 1957, whereas Sindh Muslim College awarded former prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto an honourary doctorate.
The Institute of Business Administration had awarded honourary doctorate degrees to former prime minister Shaukat Aziz in 2005 and renowned social worker Abdul Sattar Edhi in November 2006.
