Legal requirements of MQM’s resignations not yet complete: sources

ISLAMABAD: The resignations of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) lawmakers of National Assembly and Sindh Assembly have been called into question as according to sources the legal requirements are not yet complete.

Sources told Geo News on Wednesday that National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq after accepting individual resignations of all 23 MNAs in his chamber, wrote the words “Please process” on them.

According to sources, the resignation process is not yet complete which means they have not been approved yet.

Sources said that the legal team of the federal government has had a meeting with the NA speaker to review the constitutional and legal aspects as well as the regulations of the Assembly with regards to the resignations.

Meanwhile, Sindh Assembly Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani has also said that the resignations of MQM’s 51 MPAs cannot be approved immediately.

He added that a legal team will review the resignations tomorrow (Thursday, August 13).

In addition, Senate Chairman Raza Rabbani said this evening that he has received the resignations of the eight MQM senators, adding that, however, the resignations are being reviewed under Article 64, Rule 18.

No notification issued yet by NA Secretariat

Spokesperson at the National Assembly said this evening that the NA Secretariat has prepared a notification regarding the MQM MNA’s resignations but it hasn’t been issued yet.

He added that there are currently no signatures on the prepared notification.

Meanwhile, sources at the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) also said that the ECP has not yet received any resignations or a notification from the NA Secretariat.

Resignations not yet accepted: Khawaja Asif

Federal Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said today that NA Speaker Ayaz Sadiq has only written the word ‘process’ on the resignations of MQM NA lawmakers, and that they have not been approved yet.

Asif went on to say that the NA speaker will delay the matter of approval to the extent which is in his power.

He further said that MQM Chief Altaf Hussain has said that if the federal government addresses the concerns of MQM then the party would be ready to take back the resignations.

The minister added that the government therefore is trying to address the concerns of MQM.

Earlier today, MQM Chief Altaf Hussain while speaking exclusively to Geo News said that, “If the Rangers conduct the Karachi operation honestly without any bias then it will gradually wash away our wounds.”

Speaking on Hamid Mir’s programme Capital Talk today, Altaf Hussain said, “I will also take care myself to protect the dignity of the institutions.”

The MQM chief while talking to guest Defence Analyst, Shahzad Chaudhry, on Geo News programme Capital Talk, said that Chaudhry should contact Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif and request him to tell the Rangers to conduct the operation with integrity.

Lawmakers from MQM resigned from the Senate, National Assembly and Sindh Assembly today over claims of being victimised in the ongoing operation in Karachi.
