Fazl doing spadework to resolve MQM resignations issue

ISLAMABAD: Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Fazlur Rehman met Prime Minister’s Special Assistant for Law Ashtar Ausaf on Saturday to discuss the issue of Muttahida Quami Movement’s (MQM) resignations from the National Assembly. It was decided during the meeting that until the notifications were issued, the resignation of each MQM MNA could be taken back. Legal experts also presented a report on MQM resignations to Fazlur Rehman, according to which negotiations should start to bring the disgruntled lawmakers back to parliament, since the resignations had not yet been accepted. Former Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) president Kamran Murtaza chaired the meeting of legal experts in Islamabad, in which legal and constitutional status of the resignations was examined. The participants of the meeting were of the view that the speaker of the National Assembly had to decide whether the resignations were tendered voluntarily or under pressure. It is the speaker who has to decide whether the resignations are correct or not. The meeting concluded that negotiations should, therefore, begin with MQM MNAs before any notifications were issued. The JUI-F will start talks with the MQM from today (Sunday). According to reports, the JUI-F chief also spoke with MQM chief Altaf Hussain via telephone on Saturday evening. During the call, Fazl assured Altaf that all genuine grievances of the MQM would be addressed. It may be mentioned here Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and opposition leader Khursheed Shah had requested Fazl to convince the MQM parliamentarians to withdraw their resignations.
