Pak-India talks to go on, as Basit invites Hurriyat leaders to meet Sartaj
Mirwaiz, Geelani likely have audience with Pakistan’s adviser in New Delhi

NEW DELHI – The adviser-level talks between Pakistan and India will take place despite Pakistan’s High Commission Abdul Basit invited Kashmiri leaders to meet National Security and Foreign Affairs adviser Sartaj Aziz.

Quoting sources, the Indian media said that India would make its stand clear later in the backdrop of reports that Kashmiri leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani will meet Sartaj while other leaders like Mirwaiz Umar Farooq were invited for the reception being held in the visiting adviser’s honour by the Pakistan mission.

Tehreek-e-Hurriyate-Kashmir spokesman Ayaz Akbar said that Chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani was invited for the talks with Sartaj Aziz. A decision on whether to accept the invitation will be taken at a meeting of the Hurriyat Conference. Akbar said that the stand taken by Pakistan was welcome as they have asserted that there will be no dialogue with India without inclusion of Kashmir issue.

Hurriyat Conference Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has also been invited to meet Sartaj Aziz during his visit to India for the talks with India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval. “We are meeting to take a decision on the issue,” a Hurriyat spokesman said. “We believe in dialogue as a solution for Kashmir issue,” he said.

India had last year cancelled secretary-level talks with Pakistan after its High Commissioner invited Kashmiri leaders for a meeting ahead of the talks. Sartaj is scheduled to meet Doval for talks on August 23 in New Delhi, as decided in a meeting between Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi last month in Ufa in Russia.

Both Pakistan and India are expected to present evidences about each country’s intervention in other’s internal matters. Pakistan would give hard proofs of India’s intelligence agency’s support and funding to terrorists in some parts of the country and acts of terrorism in Karachi and the tribal areas. Pakistan will also raise the ceasefire violations at the Line of Control and the Working Boundary.
