Experts point out impact of climate change in Pakistan
Pakistan high on vulnerability scale due to changes in weather
LAHORE – Pakistan is very high on vulnerability scale due to frequent changes in weather, as the whole world is facing a climate change which is expected to increase in temperatures worldwide.
“Geographical location already places Pakistan in heat surplus zone,” this information was shared with participants of a workshop. The participants pointed out climate change in the world, saying the change in climate was alarming and people should pay attention on this issue.
At a workshop – organised by the Individualland Pakistan – significance of the climate change was discussed besides its effects and repercussions. Some scientists believe that the climate change might take away or alter monsoon from Pakistan and India, besides intensive rains, dry winters and prolonged dry spells.
A similar sensitisation workshop was also held in Karachi. One of the participants said that the climate change was occurring so rapidly. “We can observe sudden changes in weather around us,” he said, and pointed out that the floods in Punjab and some other parts were an example of this weather change.
Farhan Anwar – a climate change researcher – was resource person at the workshop while Sundas Syeda and Hoor Kakar were the facilitators. During the workshop, a documentary was exhibited on climate change in order to make the audience aware of the importance of this topic.
The aim of the workshop was also to create awareness among journalists on climate change and its effects. Besides media, politicians also participated in the workshop and lauded efforts of the organisation for arranging this workshop.
