LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman, Imran Khan on Saturday night congratulated his party workers and supporters over the ruling of the Election Tribunal, declaring the election of National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, null and void.
“The second wicket is down and the third will fall next week,” Khan warned while addressing jubilant workers of his party and supporters in Lahore's Zaman Park, following the verdict of the Election Tribunal probing the rigging allegations in NA-122 on which Ayaz Sadiq had been pronounced the winner.
Earlier, the Tribunal declared the elections null and void for the National Assembly slot and two Provincial Assembly seats: PP-147 and PP-148. The Tribunal ordered re-election in these constituencies.
Khan congratulated the people who stood by him during the party’s protest sit-ins in Islamabad, saying those who participated in the sit-ins rendered many sacrifices. “Our people even embraced martyrdoms,” he added.
He said his party had to struggle for two-and-a-half years for justice, stressing that Pakistan’s electoral system has to be reformed.
“We went to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) whose responsibility is to dispense justice,” he said, adding, ‘today Chairman NADRA should feel ashamed’.
He said if they had agreed to audit elections in four constituencies of Lahore, there would have been no sit-ins last year. “Today, it became clear to all why Nawaz Sharif was unwilling to allow audit in four constituencies,” he added.
He reiterated the allegation that the ECP was in cahoots with Pakistan Muslim League-N in ‘fixing the match’.
Drawing Ayaz Sadiq’s attention, Khan said: “I can feel your agony and that of your family.”
“Although the government calls the irregularities in elections a mistake, we would describe it as rigging,” Khan said to the charged crowd.
He said he has written a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner. “I want him to reply within two weeks or else I will stage a sit-in demonstration in front of the Election Commission’s office,” he warned.
