NA speaker de-seated, tribunal orders re-election in NA-122

LAHORE – The Election Tribunal on Saturday disqualified National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq as member of the National Assembly and ordered re-polling in his constituency – NA-122.

With 200 pages, the detailed verdict – which was to be announced at 10am but got delayed to 7pm – called the election in NA-122 null and void. Both Ayaz Sadiq and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan had arrived at the tribunal office to hear the decision of the case.

Party workers and activists belonging to the Pakistan Muslim League-N and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf had also gathered outside the Election Commission office. The situation was almost escalated with the party workers coming face-to-face and chanting slogans against each other.

A petition had been filed by Imran Khan challenging Ayaz Sadiq’s victory in the 2013 election. The PTI chairman who had been defeated by Ayaz Sadiq in the constituency had claimed of widespread rigging. Throughout the day, the temperature outside the tribunal remained high as political workers chanted slogans in favour of their respective leaders.

Earlier in the day, the two charged up sides came close to clashing but the situation was kept under control by a large contingent of police commandos and policewomen deployed on site. In order to keep the situation under control, further police reinforcements were called on site including water cannon to disperse supporters in case they turned violent.
