ISLAMABAD – Opposition Leader in National Assembly Khursheed Shah on Tuesday apologised for appointment of officials at the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) as he played a role in the matter.

Talking to reporters in his chamber in the Parliament House, he said that clashes among politicians would cause threat to Pakistan. He said that the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) members have become controversial and should resign with dignity.

He said that the Pakistan People’s Party had already urged the Election Commission officials to resign but, he said the members were being paid at least 0.8 million rupees every month, why would they resign? He also said that demand for resignations was solely PPP’s and by any means this does not support Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan’s demands.

– India’s violations at LoC –

Talking about relations with India, the opposition leader criticised India’s violations of ceasefire treaty along the Line of Control (LoC) in disputed state of Jammu Kashmir and propaganda over Kashmir issues. “India is trying to avoid dialogue on core issue of Kashmir,” he said.

About Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s resignations, Shah said that he held meetings with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Dr Farooq Sattar to resolve the issue. He is hopeful that the MQM would withdraw resignations. He asked MQM to show political wisdom in all matters especially on Karachi operation.

– Gold medal for Waqar Abbasi –

He said that the Sindh government and the PPP were monitoring the operation and there was no need to form a dedicated committee for the purpose. Encouraging the young people, he announced conferring gold medal on Waqar Abbasi, 18, for winning an international software competition. The student would also be given scholarship worth at least Rs 1.2 million.

The PPP leader said that he was making efforts to provide free-of-cost education to Abbasi from the prestigious Institute of Business Administration in Karachi. He admired former president Pervez Musharraf’s efforts regarding having three dykes built on Sukkur Barrage due to which the province was saved from major destruction by floods. No one worked for constructing new levees after Musharraf, he added.
