Opposition agrees in principle on joint PM candidate
ISLAMABAD: Opposition parties, including the Pakistan People's Party (PPP), the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), the Awami Muslim League (AML) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q), continue their discussion over fielding a joint candidate for the upcoming election of the prime minister.
On Sunday, PML-Q leaders Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, Pervez Elahi talked to Khurshid Shah, Sirajul Haq and Shaikh Rasheed over the phone. The leaders agreed in principle for the need to field a joint candidate for the PM's slot.
A meeting in this regard will be held in Islamabad on Monday (today).
The PML-Q leadership is spearheading efforts for nomination of a unanimous candidate from the opposition for the office of prime minister.
Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and Chaudhry Pervez Elahi held telephonic conversation with Opposition leader Syed Khurshid Shah, Ameer Jamaat-e-Islami Senator Sirajul Haq and Awami Muslim League leader Shaikh Rashid Ahmad. "During the conversations, they exchanged views in detail about prevailing political situation and it was agreed that nomination of a unanimous candidate of the opposition for the office of the prime minister is essential," party insiders said.
PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari also directed Syed Khurshid Shah to contact all political parties so that the opposition could field a consensus candidate for leader of the house.
Chairing a PPP meeting at Zardari House in Islamabad on Sunday, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari discussed the prevailing political situation in the country. He directed Shah to contact all opposition parties in the Parliament.
The meeting was attended by Syed Khurshid Ahmed Shah, Syed Nayyar Hussain Bukhari, Senator Farhatullah Babar, Senator Aitezaz Ahsan, Senator Latif Khosa, former prime minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar and Jamil Soomro.
