Kulsoom Nawaz diagnosed with throat cancer: reports

LONDON: Kulsoom Nawaz, wife of former premier Nawaz Sharif, had reportedly been diagnosed with throat cancer, sources said Tuesday.

A senior Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party leader close to the Sharif family confirmed to the media that Kulsoom Nawaz had been diagnosed with throat cancer during medical examination in London.

He said that the cancer was treatable, citing British doctors.

It may be mentioned that Kulsoom Nawaz is the PML-N hopeful for NA-120 by-polls.

Sources said that Kulsoom Nawaz won't participate in the initial campaign for the by-polls. Maryam Nawaz, daughter of Nawaz Sharif, would run election campaign in the absence of Kulsoom Nawaz, added sources.

Kulsoom Nawaz left for London hours before her scheduled appearance before the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on August 17.

The Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) and the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) had challenged the acceptance of her nomination papers in an election tribunal.

The tribunal on August 21, however, rejected all appeals against her nomination papers.

The NA-120 seat had fallen vacant after the disqualification of Nawaz Sharif by the Supreme Court in the Panama Papers case.
