Imran Tasks Akbar Babar with Reuniting PTI Founding Members

Islamabad: PTI founder Imran Khan has sent an important message from jail to his former longtime associate and founding leader Akbar S. Babar, tasking him with bringing together the party’s early members, disgruntled leaders and workers.

Speaking to Geo News, Akbar S. Babar confirmed that the message was conveyed to him through another longtime friend of the PTI founder who is also in jail. According to the message, Imran Khan said that whenever he was released from jail, he would first visit Akbar S. Babar’s house.

Sources said Imran had asked Akbar S. Babar to bring the party’s early associates back onto a single platform, describing those who stood with the PTI during its formative years as an asset and his genuine and selfless companions. According to the message, the PTI founder had always felt the absence of many of the party’s early associates and believed there was a need to bring back those who had played a role in establishing the party and its initial struggle.

Akbar S. Babar told Geo News that after receiving the message, he had started contacting disgruntled founding leaders and workers of the PTI. A four-member committee has also been formed in this regard under the leadership of former PTI Punjab senior vice president Rana Sohail. The committee includes former PTI founding leader Amin Zaki, Faisal Pirzada and ISF founding leader Asif Ahmed. The committee has begun contacting early PTI associates who have become disgruntled or left the party.

Akbar S. Babar confirmed that the message from Imran Khan had been conveyed to him through a mutual friend. He said he had no personal differences with the PTI founder and that their differences had been political. He said that if Imran Khan visited his house, he would welcome him warmly and embrace him.

Akbar said he was making efforts to bring the party’s disgruntled and early associates together on a single platform. A convention of these members would be held in Lahore next month after efforts to reunite them, he added. According to Akbar, many early PTI associates had parted ways with the party because of people driven by a hunger for power. However, he said, the response from disgruntled and founding members to Imran Khan’s recent message had been very positive.

He stressed that his objective was not to engage in a personal confrontation with anyone but to reunite those PTI members who had contributed their time and energy and made sacrifices during the party’s establishment and early struggle. Babar said the party’s early associates had founded the PTI around an ideology and that there was now a need to bring all these people closer once again. Sources said contacts among the PTI’s early and disgruntled leaders had intensified following Imran Khan’s message, with more important leaders expected to be approached and meetings held in the coming days. - The News
