KARACHI: Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani has reiterated that Pakistan’s sovereignty would always be the utmost priority for the government and we (government) were implementing decisions of the parliament.

Chairing a meeting on the occasion of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP)’s Youm-e-Tasees (Foundation Day) here at the Sindh Chief Minister’s House on Wednesday Gilani said, “We cannot allow our people to feel insecure and no one can take us for granted”.

“World must respect our sacrifices against terrorism and honour the role that Pakistan continues to play,” he said, adding that the NATO attack was a tragedy and the government strongly condemned it. He further said that as the head of Nuclear Command Authority, he was looking into the matter himself and will ensure that the issue is properly dealt with.

“We must all remain united and not allow the enemies of Pakistan to take advantage of our political differences,” he said, adding that the people opposing PPP must realise that the country comes first and not their opposition against the party or the government. “As a democratic nation, we must respect all our institutions and have faith in the parliament where elected representatives from various parties are sitting today,” he added.

Talking about development, the prime minister said that the government had spent Rs 1.5 trillion so far in the course of development. He felicitated the workers and well-wishers of the PPP on party’s Foundation Day and deeply praised the struggle of all party workers.

Gilani appraised the untiring spirit of every worker in the party and said that it was only because of their commitment that they (PPP) had achieved this democratic environment. “Pakistan People’s Party is the only party where not only the workers but the leaders too have given great sacrifices” he said.

Gilani reiterated the party’s commitment to the process of reconciliation that was initiated by slain party Chairman Benazir Bhutto. He said that the Co-Chairman President Asif Ali Zardari and his team had sincerely followed the path of reconciliation and will continue to do so.

On the recent memo issue, he reiterated his commitment to the sovereignty of Pakistan and said that they will wait for the investigation by the Parliamentary Committee on National Security. “Regardless of the war against terrorism, floods, energy crises and so many other challenges, we have remained focused on the development of Pakistan,” Gilani said. People who only want to develop themselves are opportunists and can go to any degree for their personal interest, he said.

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah welcomed the prime minister and thanked him for his regular visits to the province, which provided guidance both politically and administratively. He lauded the services rendered by President Asif Ali Zardari who had provided many basic facilities for common men.
