No justification for taking memo case to SC: PM

* Gilani says conspiracies are being hatched to involve Zardari in memo scandal

* Says he is ready to face result of memo inquiry

* Govt forced to tackle non-issues during last four years

LAHORE: Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani said on Saturday that there was no justification for taking the memo case to the Supreme Court.

Addressing a meeting of PPP parliamentarians in the Punjab Assembly at the Governor’s House, he said that he was ready to face the result of the memo scandal inquiry.

He claimed that President Zardari had no involvement with the inquiry and that conspiracies were being hatched against him to involve him in the scandal.

The PM said that the government could not be destabilised through undemocratic means, adding that such conspiracies were being hatched against the government for the last four years and that such conspiracies could not succeed at any cost.

He observed that both the government and parliament were strong and that they could not be affected by any conspiracy, adding that the democratic process was not established in one day and that many sacrifices had been rendered to initiate this it. He held that the betterment of the nation lay in the smooth running of the democratic process. The prime minister said that that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Pakistan would be protected at all costs.

Gilani said that PPP founder Zulfikar Ali Bhutto had laid down the foundation of Pakistan’s nuclear programme and that the incumbent democratic government would ensure its security. He said that credit for the country’s missile technology, which had made its defence impregnable, went to Benazir Bhutto.

The prime minister said that the government being in place despite several undemocratic attempts to dislodge bore evidence of a strong democratic system.

He claimed that conspirators were now hopelessly trying to destabilise the government by pushing for general polls before the Senate elections.

Gilani also said that during the last four years, the government had been forced to tackle non-issues and that despite conspiracies, numerous challenges were dealt with.

He was of the view that the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) was a federal party which had roots all over the country, adding that the elections held in Azad Kashmir and Gilgilt-Baltistan and the by-polls in various constituencies of the country manifested its popularity. He said that the PPP had come into power through the people’s mandate and that it did not believe in negative tactics.

Gilani claimed that the history of the PPP was replete with sacrifices rendered by its leaders, including its founding father, for the rights of the people and the downtrodden. “The PPP is the name of ideology and struggle,” he said.

The PM went on to say that the deprivations being faced by the people of south Punjab would be addressed by carving out a Seraiki province. staff report/agencies
