Obama phones Zardari, vows full probe into NATO attack
WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama on Sunday made a telephone call to President Asif Ali Zardari “to personally express his condolences on the tragic loss” of twenty-four Pakistani soldiers in a NATO strike on a military outpost along the Afghan border this past week, the White House said. “The president (Obama) made clear that this regrettable incident was not a deliberate attack on Pakistan and reiterated the United States’s strong commitment to a full investigation,” a statement issued by the White House said. “The two [residents reaffirmed their commitment to the US-Pakistan bilateral relationship, which is critical to the security of both nations, and they agreed to stay in close touch,” the statement added. On Saturday, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had also made a call to Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani to express deep condolences over the tragedy and reaffirm US respect for the key regional country’s sovereignty. app
