PPP custodian of constitution and democracy: Babar

* Ex-law minister advises Nawaz Sharif to utilise parliament

DERA ISMAIL KHAN: PPP senator and former federal minister for law and parliamentary affairs, Dr Babar Awan said, on Sunday, that Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) is the custodian of constitution, democracy and rights of people and will foil all conspiracies against democratic system in the country.

In his telephonic address to ‘Istehkam-e-Pakistan’ rally of PPP leaders and workers, which started from Haq Nawaz Park and peacefully culminated in front of Press Club, Dr Babar Awan said PPP leaders Quaid-e-Awam Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto have sacrificed their lives but did not compromise on rights of people.

He said PPP’s founder Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto had given a unanimous constitution to the country in 1973 that has made the country intact.

Following the footsteps of Quaid-e-Awam, he said the present government has restored the constitution in its original form.

Baber said Zardari is the only president who returned his powers back to parliament and criticism against him was tantamount to rejecting the verdict of parliament.

He said, “President Asif Ali Zardari has raised the slogan of ‘Pakistan Kapay’ at a critical time when people were furious and enraged after the martyrdom of Shaheed-e-Jamahoryat Benazir Bhutto.”

“Whenever PPP was given the government, the country was confronted with enormous challenges. However, with the Grace of Allah Almighty, our party had worked vigorously by addressing all issues during its tenure with support of masses,” he maintained.

NFC Award, 18th Amendment, FATA reforms, peace in Swat, poverty alleviation programme under Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), Islamabad High Court, Balochistan and FATA packages, renaming NWFP as Khyber Pakthunkhwa, and provincial autonomy, etc, are of the few major achievements of the government to ameliorate lots of people.

He said PPP have always considered people are the real power and with their support, all conspiracies being hatched against democracy would be frustrated. Baber said gone were the days when US demand was accepted just on a single phone call.

He said the government has taken bold decisions in line with wishes and aspirations of its people after the NATO brazen attack on security check posts in Mohmand Agency.

He said only the PPP will resolve the problems of masses as opposition has no agenda to address them.

Baber said PPP government had inherited problems but it is trying its best to address them on priority basis.

He said parliament and government will complete its tenure and problems of masses would be addressed on priority.

He said parliament was the supreme institution of the country and urged PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif to come to parliament for service of masses. They were struggling for the cause of democracy and not confining themselves like PML-N for the agenda of ‘Takht e Lahore’, he said, adding, that the president would complete his term in the year 2013.

He said PPP was fighting the case of people of Punjab and democracy and like Gilgit-Baltistan, Saraiki province would be also be established to accelerate pace of development there. Babar announced that they had constituted a committee under Makhdoom Shahbuddin for creation of a Saraiki province. Earlier, the PPP leaders and workers were holding placards and banners with slogans ‘President Zardari Qadum Baro Hum Tumharay Sath Hain’. agencies
