LAHORE: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) central leadership has indirectly conveyed its fear of a coup in the wake of ongoing conspiracies and the memo scandal against their government to its provincial leadership in the PPP Punjab parliamentary party meeting held at the Governor’s House on Saturday, sources told Daily Times.
The PPP Punjab leadership has been asked to activate all party wings and forums immediately in order to penetrate the general public by increasing contacts at grass root level and gather public support for the party in order to avoid any untoward incident aimed at derailing the democratic system of the country.
The meeting was presided over by MNA Faryal Talpur, sister of President Asif Zardari who is also the Central in-charge of the People’s Youth. PPP Punjab President Imtiaz Safdar Warraich, Raja Riaz Makhdoom Shahabuddin and other party leaders were present in the meeting. The meeting expressed complete confidence in the leadership of President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani and expressed its resolve to defeat the conspiracies against democracy and parliament. The meeting decided to activate all wings and forums of the party and increase public contacts at grass root level in order to show the party strength to the opponents and conspirators. The meeting also decided to activate its Youth Wings, which would serve the dual functions of strengthening the party as well as countering the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf
The parliamentary party meeting also decided to observe the anniversary of Benazir Bhutto on a larger scale compared to last year. The party’s Punjab leadership has been ordered to take as many workers and supporters as possible to Garhi Khuda Bukh to participate in the anniversary of Benazir Bhutto on December 27.
Sources said that the President Zardari has given a special assignment to his sister Faryal Talpur to activate the party in order to counter the ongoing propaganda against the party, as well as the president, in the wake of the memo case hearing in the Supreme Court and the clear stance of the army leadership and ISI chief on this issue.
According to a cable of Wikki Leaks, President Zardari, in a meeting with the US ambassador, is quoted as saying that if he were to be assassinated, his sister Faryal Talpur would then be named president and that he had requested the United Arab Emirates government to take in his family in the event of his death. Cables showed Ms Talpur as a person about whom everyone had positive feelings.
