President’s return disappoints rumour-mongers: Gilani
ISLAMABAD: The return of President Asif Ali Zardari appears to have given a new lease of life to the embattled Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) government as Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani said that the president’s return would put an end to the rumour-mongering in the country and frustrate those hoping to capitalise on the situation. The prime minister expressed these views when he met a number of parliamentarians at his Parliament House chamber and Prime Minister’s House. The parliamentarians’ meeting was meant to discuss development projects but the political situation also came under discussion. In an apparent reference to Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the parliamentarians noted that another king’s party was emerging on the political landscape, but its fate would not be different from the kings’ party made by successive dictators in the past. They believed that the civil society, media and other institutions of the Federation were in favour of democracy in the country and therefore caretakers and technocrats would face the disappointment they deserve. MNA Mahreen Anwar Raja praised the prime minister’s recent speech in the Senate, saying it was both suggestive and meaningful in every respect. Another MNA, Mir Dost Muhammad Mazari, complained that inter-departmental meddling was hampering the pace of development. The prime minister took notice of the matter and directed that it must be resolved without any delay. MNA Syed Hamid Saeed Kazmi said that Azam Swati’s credentials were questionable and he turned against him because he could not get Ministry of Religious Affairs. Aftab Shabban Mirani and Senator Syed Zafar Ali Shah said that completion of tenure by the prime minister would be in the best interest of both the country and the democratic process. staff report
